A bizarre urban legend says that sodium erythorbate is made from earthworms. It isn’t, but the rumor gained so much steam that the U.S. Department of Agriculture actually had to clear up the issue.
10. Potassium Lactate
Potassium lactate is more confusing than disgusting. What is it? According to the FDA, it’s a white, odorless solid made with lactic acid and potassium hydroxide. The chemical is used as a flavor enhancer, and for inhibiting pathogen growth.
